VOTE OF THANKS ay P.M. Patterson's Book Signing
                                          Saturday Oct. 11th 2003

My name is David Rowe.  I was born in Sav-La-Mar, Mr. Pattersonıs town and I am a Professor of Law at the University of Miami School of Law.

It is my pleasure to move the Vote of Thanks.

Before I speak about the Piece De Resistance, I want to thank the Consul General the Hon. Ricardo Allicock, the Consular Staff, the publishers of the Book, the county authorities and the Library officials for what has been a wonderful and intellectually stimulating event.

Those of us, who are Jamaicans, know that the island is frequently associated with Reggae, Dunnıs River and Jerk Pork, but we also have a great history of grand men of letters.

Marcus Garvey, a national hero and civil rights leader, set the pace for civil rights in the 20th century with his writings and speeches.  Norman Manley and his son Michael Manley,
led us through independence and economic self-determination with their innovative ideas and scholarship.

By achieving three terms as Prime Minister, Percival Patterson has outdone all of our Post War Politicians and has raised the racial and national consciousness of the Jamaican people.  He has put the icing on the cake of national individual achievement.

Our national motto is ³out of many one people².  Percival Patterson is a brilliant Black Barrister and he is our emphatically re-elected Prime Minister and Jamaicans of all stripes can be proud of him.  His scholarship and his love for the common man have uplifted us all.

From the Chinese Jamaican on Barry Street to the Rasta man in Negril, to the incarcerated farm worker deportee at Krome, Percival Patterson is their Prime Minister, they look to him for
leadership and they are proud of him.  The three Ps seem to go together, Percival Patterson and Pride and speaking of Ps should I add to that, Power to the People.  Percival Patterson is a man of the people and an accomplished author.

Thank you for your message Mr. Prime Minister.  In Jamaican politics, to use the vernacular "you can lose the wuk", so Mr. Prime Minister, I am happy that you are writing to tell them how it is done.  You have an independent and analytical mind Mr. Patterson.  Nobody tells you when and where to have Breakfast.

I am sure that local members of Parliament, international Diplomats, scholars and librarians will digest this bookıs contents with gusto, the masterpiece of a Master. We will all read with purpose, the perspicacity of P.J., as reflected in his fine, new book.

Thank you Mr. Prime Minister, Jamaicans, Caribbean Nationals, we are proud of you.
