The Jubilate Arts Preparatory Academy (JAPA) is pleased to announce our newest program, “Make Somethin’ Happen,” our Summer Music Institute for High School Students.
  The institute is sponsored by the Dade Community Foundation and is a collaborative effort presented by Jubilate Inc. (jubilatearts.org) and Florida Memorial College’s Department of Music. 
Additional sponsors include the Miami Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs, the Jim Moran Foundation, Bank Atlantic, the Keith & Renata Ward Family Fund and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. 
Program Description: Held on the campus of Florida Memorial College (FMC), 15800 N.W. 42nd Avenue in northwest Miami-Dade, the Institute presents an exciting chance for talented high school students to participate at no cost (thanks to our sponsors), in a rich and rewarding two week-long workshop led by a vibrant faculty of music educators and performers. Program components include: 
*     CHORAL: The daily schedule will include choral rehearsals and small group instruction in solo voice and musicianship skills. 
*     STRINGS:  Engage string students in the art of rehearsing and performing in small ensembles. Violin, viola, cello and bass students have a chance to strengthen their skills in a supportive environment in FOUR distinct workshops. 
*     The SMI Jazz “Cats” Workshop is aimed at exceptionally gifted and intrinsically motivated jazz band students between their sophomore and senior years of high school. 
*     SMI GRAND CONCERT : The Institute will end with a final concert on Sunday, June 29, at 2:00 p.m. on the campus of FMC. The performance will feature all musicians and a variety of ensembles. 
Eligibility: The institute is open to talented vocalists; string, steel pan and band players between the rising ninth grade and 2004 high school seniors. The institute will meet daily (Monday - Friday) from 9:00 A.M. To 3:00 P.M. 
* Benefits for students include:
* Intensive fundamental instruction, artistic training, individualized instruction and rehearsals; academic preparation; skills development and counseling;
* ·Their studies will include composition, jazz, steel pan, strings and voice; 
* ·Seminars on listening, performance anxiety, applying to college, the art of auditioning, and performance; 
* ·SMI will also include, the Florida Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Institute for Non-Violence’s Kingian Nonviolence and Conflict Resolution Program, Toastmaster’s Communication Skills Development and CPR Instruction;
* ·Free transportation to and from FMC;
* ·Computer literacy and proficiency with technology through music, graphic design, word processing, database and various music software applications,
* ·An opportunity to spend a day at the Estafan’s Crescent Moon Studio to produce and prepare their demo.
