STOP SMOKING IN TIME FOR THE NEW “NO-SMOKING” LAW
CORAL SPRINGS, FL – More than 90 percent of smokers would quit if they could, according to Dr. Robert Wernick, Broward clinical psychologist. However, the challenges to kicking the habit are many.
Florida’s constitutional Amendment VI, recently enacted to protect people from the health hazards of second-hand tobacco smoke, heightens the problem for smokers. This no-smoking law affects places such as lobbies, restaurants, bars, employee lounges, banquet halls, retail stores, hallways, and possibly outside pool areas. It applies to employees as well as customers. Whether or not Florida citizens agree with the controversy over second-hand smoke, penalties for smoking in the workplace will go into effect July 1st of this year.
To help smokers put an end to their potentially lethal habit, Coral Springs Medical Center (CSMC) will be hosting a special program, directed by Dr. Wernick, entitled QuitSmart. Scheduled for Monday, June 16, 2003 at 6:30 pm, the program will be held in Classroom A at Coral Springs Medical Center, located at 3000 Coral Hills Drive.
Developed out of research from Duke University, QuitSmart has been helping people stop smoking for more than 25 years. This four-session program tracks success rates ranging from 48-66% compared to the 20-30% rates with other programs.
“One of the reasons for the high success rate with QuitSmart is that it addresses the 3 major components of smoking: the physical addiction, emotional dependence, and the smoking habit. Quitting smoking is not easy, but the QuitSmart program will increase one’s chance of success,” says Dr. Wernick.
For information about QuitSmart and registration for the June 16th class, call the Community Education of the CSMC at (954)344-3344.
Coral Springs Medical Center is a facility of the North Broward Hospital District. The District, providing service since 1938, is a nonprofit community health system offering a full spectrum of healthcare services.
