It was a day full of fancy hats, merriment, relaxation, and fun at the Eighth Annual North Broward County Links’ Unity Luncheon, held at the Wyndham Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sponsors for the event were Paradies of Fort Lauderdale, Brooks International, and the RES Business Education and Training Corporation.
Guest speaker for the luncheon was Grammy and Academy Award winning singer and composer, Isaac Hayes—affectionately called by many during the luncheon as “Mr. Shaft.”
Mistress of ceremonies for the luncheon was Attorney Vennie Lynn, a stand-up comic who performs regularly at the Improv Club in West Palm Beach and the New York Comedy Club in Boca Raton. Musical selections throughout the luncheon were provided by Northeast High School’s student jazz ensemble, Insignia.
“During our past seven luncheons, we have attempted to bring to the community exciting, enjoyable, and informative guest presenters and entertainment,” said Margaret Roseburr, president of the North Broward County

Singer Isaac Hayes highlighted the North Broward County Chapter of The Links’ Eighth Annual Unity Luncheon. For many luncheon. For many luncheon attendees it was a trip down memory lane as he soulfully sang songs from the 60s thru today.

Chapter of The Links, Inc. “This year was no different. We had another dynamic and talented artist with us in Mr. Isaac Hayes.”
In addition to singing a variety of soul-stirring melodies from the past and present, Hayes shared with the audience his childhood memories of a country life in Covington and Memphis, Tennessee; where he was raised by his sharecropper grandparents. “Those days were filled with hard work, lots of love and plenty of homegrown food,” Hayes reflected.
Today, as an astute businessman, author, musician, singer, actor, radio personality, philanthropist and cook, Hayes told the audience, that whenever he reaches one pinnacle in life, he does not stay at that level, but strives to grow to a higher level. “Continue to grow in life. You’ve always got to expand…and think about your responsibility to the community,” said Hayes.
During the luncheon, the NBC Links presented Community Service awards and contributions to a variety of organizations including: the United Negro College Fund, the Sickle Cell Disease Association, the Friends of Children, Inc., the African American Success Foundation, and the Lupus Foundation. The recipient of the prestigious 2003 North Broward County Links’ President’s Award was Brooks International.
Door prizes during the luncheon were provided by: Ancestral Legacies; Bob Beamon Golf and Tennis Classic; Business Exchange Network, Inc.; Digital Mamba Technologies, Inc.; Ingenuity Marketing, Inc.; Nails by Pebbles, Kings & Queen Salon; Office Depot; Warm Spirit-In Home Personal Spa; and the Wyndham Bonaventure Resort and Spa.

“Our luncheon is a fundraising event which enables our chapter to continue executing its many important and needed community services and projects,” said Roseburr. “We are very grateful for the support of our sponsors, door prize contributors, and the community,” she added.
Luncheon Co-Chairs for the event were Links Jackie Bolden and Deborah Bowen. The Links, Inc. is an international organization with over 10,000 women in more than 275 chapters. Founded in 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the organization is committed to educational, cultural and civic empowerment, especially among the disadvantaged. In 1995, the North Broward County Chapter of The Links was established. Each chapter is charged with implementing the National Program Facets of the organization: Services to Youth, the Arts, National Trends and Services, and International Trends and Services.

Academy and Grammy Award winning singer and composer, Isaac Hayes was the guest speaker at the NBC Links 2003 Luncheon. Hayes shared memorable childhood stories with the audience, and sang such hiots as “Guilty,” and Dejaå Vu.” Here, Mr Hayes proudly displays a “EJ and Company” cd presented to him by Linda Houston Jones, the widow of Emridge “EJ” Jones. Mr. Hayes said he was familiar with EJ’s musical talents.
