RAISING THE BAR

BY REICLAND ANDERSON
Drinks? Beer? Whiskey? Rum? Or does the legal profession come to mind, where Lawyers are called to the bar. For many a bar is a five feet length of one-inch steel used to bore holes in huge rocks readying them for blasting. These were manually used prior to the era of the mobile air compressor. Alongside this we have the crow bar, a kind of lever used for moving objects. Someone once said, “ Give me a bar (lever) long enough and I will move the world.” In either case, whether bursting up huge rocks or leveraging heavy machinery and loads, a BAR is an indispensable ally. After 15 years looking at the sign BAR realtor, we must conclude that this interpretation of Bar has to be the most appropriate to compare to Barrington Anthony Russell and his company BAR
REALTOR.

BAR REALTOR was established in Florida in 1998. The objective of the company is TO BE TRUE TO THE TRUST AND WORTHY OF THE PRIVILEGE GIVEN US BY OUR CLIENTS IN ATTAINING THE AMERICAN DREAM. Barry had entered the real estate field in Orlando Florida where he worked with Century 21 Realty way back in 1989. He was persuaded to come to South Florida where he worked as sales
manager for Excelsior Realty in 1990 thereby entering the most competitive corridor in the real estate industry in the entire State of Florida. Many do not realize that the top agents of all the leading real estate companies practice within this Commercial / Oakland parallel. It was not surprising therefore, to find Barry switching to the Re/Max Partners network in 1993, and rising to be their top agent consecutively for the last three years before establishing BAR REALTOR.
This article will attempt to look a little bit closer at Barry and to see how he has equipped himself to help raise the BAR in the real estate profession, a profession that has survived for over 150 years and is still going strong. “We must acknowledge who we are before we can venture into the market, and this is not restricted to real estate sales, we have to include insurance, Car sales, mortgages, banking and financial services. One has to be blind to racism, blind to under-education and blind to egotism and other idiosyncrasies. However, in spite of our best efforts the market place is rife with unethical practices.” Declares an outspoken Barry, widely regarded as a leading community speaker on behalf of his Kiwanis club, (He is acting president and President designate of the Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale
Lakes West Sunrise). He also serves as public relations officer for the Caribbean Heart Menders Association and is active with the Broward Beautification Committee.

Like many other black business owners, Barry has honed his skills and adjusted his thinking. The South Florida region is rapidly changing; there are 36 different ethnic minorities here. “One cannot sell out their soul for monetary gain” he opines” it’s not worth it, realtors can be sued, and can lose their licenses for unethical practices, Many agents, sometimes innocently, break the rules in their effort to help their customers. I am in favor of more frequent Ethics and Law refresher courses for real estate practitioners.” Barry himself has studied extensively, and earned the CRB (Certified real estate brokerage) GRI (Graduate real estate institute) and CRS (Certified real estate specialist) a designation held by only 1 in 20 realtors. These are the tools that have assisted Barry to use his BAR to help Clients achieving not only their Dream house but also the best way of making a living. He firmly believes that if you take care of the customer, then the commission will take care of itself

Thursday June 5, therefore, was a surprise only to Barry who had not expected the accolades being bestowed upon him. The City of Lauderhill had been fully aware of his many services to the community. The Mayor Of Lauderdale Lakes, Sam Brown himself attended and read his proclamation declaring Thursday June 5th BAR REALTOR DAY. His office staff worked feverishly to decorate and enhance the appearance of the seven thousand square feet office, Office manager Barbara Bonnema (Barry’s Right hand for over five years) must feel justly proud of the elegantly presented surroundings. Commissioners Levroy Williams, Hazelle Rogers, Ray Billingsly, were in attendance. On hand was Jamaica’s Consul General Ricardo Allicock ever watchful for meaningful developments in the community that will add to the benefit of Jamaica. He congratulated Barry and pledged his support to this venture.
Dr. Chester McCollough chaired the short dedication ceremony. Dr Lawrence Dalrymple Snr. did a litany of dedication and said a prayer from his heart as the Russell family does worship at his Bethel Baptist Church. Well-wishers included Dr, Rovan Locke, Publisher and Editor Caribbean Commentary newspaper, Mrs. Carmen Bartlett of Jamaica National Moneygram, Aston Douglas, (Financial Advisors) Shari N. Hines, P.A (Law offices) Dr. Garth Rose (Consultant) and Marcia Rigg-Baker (Beauty Pageant}

The entire Russell family was in attendance, wife Carrol- a registered nurse was busily welcoming guests and in addition keeping son Barrington Junior on schedule to attend his graduation ceremony at the Boyd Anderson High school where he is state president for the National achievers society an is the reigning “Mr. Boyd Anderson High.” Her Daughter, Cadene, is an honor Pre-med student. She is “Miss Freshman” and is the reigning “Miss Teen Jamaica Florida” all these are attestations to the fact that the Russell family is a family involved in community service.
President Barrington Russell Sr. graciously thanked everyone for his or her attendance and support. He was gratified to have Helene Grossman in attendance, as she had been a great inspiration to him and was the prime mover in his venture into business on his own. He especially thanked the Churches and pledged his continued support to their work and mission. He pointed out the difficult time that he had in deciding to expand the business. The die is now cast and he is determined to pry loose all the tough deals in this tough market on behalf of his clients. “The BAR is raised and all our agents will rise up to the high ethical standards of our profession; the service of others may be as good but never better that what is available at BAR REALTORS and as we strive to develop our office as a one-stop operation we shall endeavor to make fees to the public be the most competitive in the industry.” He asks all realtors of like
mind to join him in this mission of service to future homeowners.
