Public vs. Private Schools ?
The Difference is More than Dollars

If someone were to ask you the difference between public and private
schools, you would probably say that private schools charge tuition.
In reality, the differences extend far beyond fees. Comparisons drawn
between public and private education are sometimes based on inadequate or inaccurate information. For example, Florida law applies differently to public schools than to private schools in regard to licensing of teachers, graduation standards, and content and performance standards for courses.

Listed below are some of the main differences.

Public school teachers are required to hold college degrees and to be
licensed by the state. Private schools set their own personnel requirements.
Public schools must accept any student who is a resident, regardless of sex, race, religious affiliation, economic status or physical or mental handicap. Private schools can be selective in choosing their students.
Public schools are prohibited by the State Constitution from charging
state residents any form of tuition or other fees for materials, supplies, textbooks or transportation. Most private schools impose
fees, in addition to tuition, for one or more of these items.
The right of a public school student to a free education is guaranteed by the State Constitution. For that reason, a student may not be
disciplined in a manner that restricts or removes that right, without being afforded due process of law. Private schools are not subject to these requirements and may exclude any student whose behavior is disruptive to the learning process.
Public school students must meet state graduation requirements that include a minimum of 24 credits, a 2.0 high school grade point average and a passing score on a state-prescribed test. Graduation
requirements for private schools are determined by each school and are not subject to any state requirements.
The content and performance standards for each course offered in public high schools are prescribed by the state and each student must master those standards in order to receive credit. Each private school
establishes its own curriculum and its own standards.
Public education is just that ? education provided for all students
with standards and licensing requirements to be met and laws to be followed. Since there are no uniform standards that apply to private schools, comparisons with public schools cannot be based on common criteria and, can be both inaccurate and misleading.
With the help of dedicated staff and extensive community support, the School Board will continue to work to improve public education for
every student in Broward County.
