Ms. Marie Kong Becomes President of SFRWC/NAREB
Former Congress woman, Ms Carrie Meeks Honored

Ms.Marie Kong and Congresswoman Carrie Meek

(NAREB/REALIST), based in Lanham, Maryland. Her successor,
the Jamaican born Ms. Marie Kong, is also the 2nd Vice President
of NAREB, and within the next two years she will become the
second female National President of this Minority Real Estate/ Mortgage
Organization. Her ascendancy to the National Presidency will be the
second time in than sixty years that a woman will be heading such
a prestigious and awesome leadership position in this country.
In its most productive February 2003 Mid-Winter Conference at
Sheraton Airport Hotel, Dania, Florida, Fannie Mae Made one hundred
million dollars available to the association for its Housing America Fund
down payment assistance program. It should be noted that Ms. Kong
has been given the role as the Chief Organizer for NAREB/Realists
Annual National Conference which will be held in Montego Bay Jamaica
August 8 16, 2003, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. More than one thousand
members of this organization have finalized their traveling arrangements
and this will be one of the largest group of African-Americans to
participate in an International Conference in Jamaica.
The Honoree at the installation ceremony was deeply moved by
the decision of the Executive Council of SFRWC to single her out for
her impressive endeavors on the behalf of minority housing in South Florida.
Ms. Kong, the incoming president told the more than one hundred luncheon
guests that Congresswoman Carrie Meek stood head and shoulder over her
colleges when she was a State Senator from Miami in Tallahassee and in her
ten years in Washington D.C. in her advocacy for funds for minority housing.
This tireless Congresswoman is a source of inspiration for those who believe |
in the empowerment of minority people. Therefore ³we appreciate her for the
work she is still doing in retirement on behalf of the Haitian Community.
However, she has done more than any other Congressman or woman
for housing in South Florida. Her son, Kendrick is following in her legacy.
She brought the money back when she went to Congress she developed
a Congressional Classroom so that her Constituents can get an understanding
of how things work in the Capitol. Congresswoman Meeks, on behalf of the
SFRWC and our National Organization, (NAREB/Realist). I want to thank
you for the work you have done for your people, regardless of their Nationalities,
without seeking personal gains. We look forward to your visit with us in
 Jamaica for our National Conference.²

The honoree, a Michigan Alumnae, (class of 57) thanked Marie Kong
and her Association for bestowing this award to her. In a short but
moving speech, she reminded the guests that owning a house is one
of the major steps for wealth creation within minority communities.
³ I am overwhelmed. You will never know the people you meet in life.
I am thankful to be here, this is a wonderful award. I am dedicated to
housing. The Realists awarded me long before you were born
my first year in the Florida Legislature. I believe the occasion was
in Jamaica, they gave me a gold pin and I am going to wear it during
my weeklong stay in that beautiful country. Thanks so much for your
 decision to honored me.²
In the installation Ceremonies, Attorney Geneieve Henriques carried
out the Oath of office to the new members of the Executive Board.
In her inaugural presidential speech, Ms. Marie Kong made it be known
that there will be no easing off from the numerous responsibilities set in
motion by her predecessor. These would be the continuation of the
partnership with Ms Georgia Fosterıs Esteemed Women Organization.
This is a praiseworthy group of former welfare women who are
groomed to re-enter the marketplace. She expects her membership
of Realists to rededicate themselves to this partnership and to the
Scholarship Fund for minority children to attend colleges.
