    SUMMIT OF ORGANIZATIONS' PRESIDENTS

                                     Consul-General Ricardo Allicock

by POLITICAL ANALYST                                                            Photos by Leona Minto
It is quite clear that this Jamaican diplomat intends to improve on his impressive record of performance over the past year. He did not allow his staff to rest on its laurels and less than six weeks into the new year he has been successful in having more than one hundred Presidents of the various Jamaican business, civic and alumni organizations to his Summit, which was held on Thursday, February 5, 2004, at Reverend Horace Wards Holy Family Episcopal Church at 18501 NW 7th Avenue, downtown Miami, Florida. These leaders represent the more than 800,000 Jamaicans living within the state of Florida.
One of Consul-General Allicock's major objectives is to bring all these Jamaican organizations under one umbrella so that there is a "United Voice" to advance these diasporic people's commercial, civic and political interests at Jamaica House. He is fully aware of the economic clout; through money transmission of these Florida based organizations. At one level of this discussion, it can be said that he has been trying to catch up with the enormous influence of these Jamaicans whom he had encountered at the numerous social, political and civic functions.

Consul-General Allicock was surprised at the large turnout of these leaders and their eagerness to help him to succeed in this difficult diplomatic posting.

Consul-General Ricardo Allicock and GCACC President Lisa Narcisse

This Summit was an opportunity for the newly appointed Jamaican Deputy Director of Tourism, to the USA and Latin America Mr. Donnie Dawson to meet with these influential leaders of the Jamaican Community in the state of Florida. Unlike Consul-General Ricardo Allicock, it is very difficult to argue that there will be a breath of fresh air within the Jamaican Tourism headquarters in South West Miami. Up to the time of writing, this new deputy director of tourism has not met with the Caribbean media influentials nor has he held a welcoming party so that he can meet with Black influentials within the hospitality industry in South Florida.

It is quite difficult to accept the Wisdom of the Minister of Industry and Tourism, Honorable Aloun Assamba to replace Charles Handal with the California based Donnie Dawson. He has been here since October, and if it weren't for the Consul-General's Summit these Jamaican leaders of the various charitable, civic, educational and commercial organizations would not have met him. Those in attendance did not hear form Mr. Dawson if he will be increasing his advertising/marketing budget in order to capture a significant percentage of the African-American and Caribbean-American markets.

Presently, the message from the Jamaican Tourism headquarters on Knutsford Road, New Kingston, is to place all its advertising dollars with white marketing agencies and to bring home white travel agents from around the world to sell "Jamaica as the destination of Choice".
