                      Building Bridges Initiative to enhance
                                Jamaica-So Florida relations launched

The US Ambassador to Jamaica, Mrs. Sue Cobb continued her appeal for community building between South Florida and Jamaica with the launch of her Building Bridges Initiative in Miami recently.

To an audience of business and civic leaders and non-profit organizations from Jamaica as well as South Florida, the Ambassador outlined 11 initiatives of the program called ³Building Bridges: the Florida-Jamaica Connection² which aims to stimulate programs and plans in the several areas of on-going economic interest and mutual understanding. Programs will be developed in the areas of trade, business, law enforcement, health, education and volunteerism, while others are under consideration.

The Ambassador continued that this venture would also include knowledge sharing and contacts among Jamaica¹s and Florida¹s public and private sectors and non-governmental bodies.

Building Bridges will encompass a year-long series of events through September next year, in both communities, to carry through this outreach initiative.

The program was launched earlier this month, in Kingston, by the Ambassador. She repeated to the Florida audience that ³she intends for this partnership to be efficient in order to get things done²and also to help the island¹s development which she said added had become her second home over the past two years.

According to Mrs. Cobb, her priority over the next year was to expand the many links between Florida and Jamaica by building bridges in the areas outlined in her initiative. This effort, she added, was intended to Œcapitalize on our unique geographic proximity by facilitating contacts and working relationships and creating new opportunities that will prove mutually beneficial to both countries.¹

In attendance were Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. K.D. Knight and Jamaica¹s Consul General to Miami, Mr. Ricardo Allicock. In brief remarks, both expressed full support and cooperation of the Building Bridges Program which will help in the country¹s national development.

Some programs in strengthening and expanding Jamaica¹s national security were already in place under collaboration with the Ministry of National Security, the State of Florida, and other states within the USA as well other international law enforcement bodies, in the fight against transnational crime and drugs.

The Consul General in enhancing the efforts of the Building Bridges Initiative said that he would make an effort to create additional linkages in South Florida between the Jamaican nationals and the wider South Florida community. In the area of trade, Mr. Allicock was also hopeful that these linkages would identify resources for expanding trade relations between both regions.
