Bahamian Prime Minister Celebrates 30th Independence Anniversary
by The Entertainment Writer

Unlike the long serving Prime Ministers of Caricam such as P.J. Patterson of Jamaica, Lester Bird of Antigue and Owen Arthur of the Barbados who have failed to participate in their people¹s Independence Festivals in South Florida. This is not the case with the Bahamian Prime Minister who relished this special occasion.

For the Jamaican Prime Minister, perhaps his decision to stay away from Independence Celebrations in South Florida is due to the vexing issue of the ³Two Balls² on the same night by the pioneering force Mrs. Elgeta Thomas Martin and her competitors led by the hardworking Jamaican volunteer, Mrs. Joan Seaga-Gonzalez.

Hoisting the Bahamian Flag

An impressive aspect of the Bahamian Independence Ball on Saturday night was the Unity theme. The more than thirty Bahamian Civic/Professional organizations in the Tri-County of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach put away their competitive interests and petty personal animosities to fill up the huge ballroom. Unfortunately this is not the case in the Jamaica Community in South Florida.

The racial/caste/class stratified factors are compelling divisive themes amongst these two warring camps and matured decision making cannot take place which would lead to the same two Independence Balls but on consecutive weekends.

Prime Minister Perry Christie and wife

Let us return to the festivities of the Bahamian 30th Independence Ball. The Prime Minister took credit for the successful event due to his decision to appoint Ms. Adams as the Consul-General for Miami and the Southeastern American. As he stated ³this event is certainly a job well done. Special praise to the Consul-General. I never doubted the decision when I appointed her that she would exceed my expectations of her responsibilities in Miami, Fla.²

Prime Minister Christie, a protégé of the Founding Father of the Nation, Lestie Pindling, believes his primary mission is to build on the legacies of that great leader. He believes that for him to become a successful Prime Minister he must strengthen the ³uncut umbilical bonds of the Bahamian expatriate community and those at home. ³When we consider the proximity of Bahamas to South Florida, the striking thing is the gulf stream which dwindles us. However, that same gulf stream of the attendee ocean, has never forget to remember that it binds two nations together.² There was a sense of unbridled pride in the role that the earlier Bahamians played in the charter of the City of Miami and the building of the railroad throughout the state.

The reading of "Lest We Forget"

On his first trip to Bahamas as Prime Minister, he enthusiastically castigated his expatriates of not taking advantage of the enormous economic opportunities at home. ³ I want you to become equal partners in the economic development of your country. In the first months of my administrations, there has been on billion dollars of investments. You deserve a equal role in this investment."

Miramar Vice Mayor Fitzroy Salesman and Dr. Rovan Locke

The Prime Minister and his wife are from that special place in his country, known as ³The Valley.² He took a brief autobiographical trip and took pride in the fact that he is the son of a Taxi Driver. In his time, there was a battle against the descendants of the American Colonists who fled to the Bahamas and carved the country into their own economic enclaves. They were joined by the colonial experts from Britain and Black Bahamian majority under the dynamic leadership had to engage in

Parliamentary/Legalistic battles and on numerous occasions to capture the Political Kingdom. Now, it is a different Bahamian where ³any offspring of a Bus Driver, Taxi Man, School Teacher, Fisherman, can one day become the Prime Minister.² He encourages the Celebrants to remember that their money and equally important their varied expertise are needed in Bahamas for the executing and profitable challenges of Nation Building.
