South Florida based Jamaican Music Industry Pioneers Honored 

by Jamaica Music Federation.  

Veteran Jamaican Broadcasters, Radio Personalities promoters and Reggae Practitioners: Denver ‘Jamusa’ Silvera ,Vonnie McGowan-Arscott and renowned musician and producer Willie Lindo all transplanted New Yorkers were the proud recipients of Awards from The Jamaica Federation of Musician recognizing their Outstanding contribution in the international development of Jamaican Music Industry
    The annual JFM Surrey awards were held recently at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston bringing down the curtains on a successful 16th annual Musicians week which began on May 18-23rd with church service at church on the rocks with The Hon Portia Simpson and M.P Olivia Babsy Grange and other dignitaries in attendance

       Other activities included the Cornwall Awards  
 
Silvera of NRS Promotions and who is credited with the best reggae radio program of 2002-03 on WAVS 1170 radio by Miami newtimes.com also celebrates 41 years as a Disc Jockey his motto: MUSIC IS THE MOVEMENT OF LIFE AND IT’S THE HONEST REALIZATION OF MYSELF.
    Born in Free Hill St. Mary Jamaica JAMUSA gained firsthand, youthful experiences from many of Jamaica’s

   Pioneering sound Systems including “Howell the Duke”

Merritone and Skatalites shows promoted by his father’s Clubs in Port Maria and Oracabessa illuminated the spark back then which today has blazed into one of today’s smoother voices on South Florida Radio.  
    The Acronym and now trade mark name of Denver –Jamusa-Silvera a moniker given to him by Bunny Rugs means Jamaica Artist & Music United with the sounds of America.
    During the 60ies he played a pioneering role in the introduction of Jamaican music in the Night Clubs of New York Namely El Tigre, Inner City and the Famous Carroll Street Brooklyn Spot.
    His link with Mello Canary after his return to Jamaica created the Plaza Jams” and he is credited with playing at the 1st Reggae Sunsplash. After his sojourn in Jamaica he returned to Miami in 1978 and did the night club circuit including studio 44 and Eclipse, his voice could also be heard on WEDR,WDNA, and WRBD radio and it was his influence that changed the weekly format from Spanish to Caribbean music Monday to Friday on WAVS1170 in Davie Florida, where he still maintains his evening drive time Wednesdays to Friday from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.
    Jamusa received the Keys to the City of Fort Lauderdale for his role in the coordinating of The Bridge to Unite Blacks to honor Nelson Mandela. He is the proud father of 12 year old Nickecia Rene.
Vonnie McGowan Arscott a Vere Technical alumna started a career doing voice overs for Sweepin’ Yard Music Productions a company she co owned which produced programs on WHBI now WNWK 105.9 FM which is heard in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Philadelphia. 
    She Co Hosted the Sweepin` Yard Music Showcase with Ronnie McGowan from 1977 to 82 and later worked as an Independent Producer Presenter and Instructor with the City University of New York (CUNY) And as a member of Metro Community Broadcasters for National Public Radio NPR WNYE 91.5FM and WHCR (Harlem Community Radio) even while she was a single Parent and student at New York University [NYU] throughout the 80ies. 
    Known in the Inner Circles as the Sophisticated Lady of Reggae Radio and has been for many years the Most Sought after Emcee since the 70ies.
    Vonnie is credited for her participation and innovation in reviving and introducing Jamaican Music on radio and positively showcasing Jamaica during a time when Jamaica and Jamaicans were receiving very negative reviews and reception in the Washington DC areas and commuted twice weekly from her home in New York to Washington D.C. to present her Sophisticated Happening Music Showcase on radio WOL Am to the Metro DC and Maryland areas. 
    She went on to promoting and producing some of the most successful and memorable live Jamaican Festivals and shows throughout the North Eastern United States. 
    These efforts pioneered and inspired the reacceptance of the positive influences of Jamaica.
    She was also the architect and sole investor for the largest assembly of Jamaican Musicians and Singers from the 50ies and for the promotion and staging of ‘The Beat Goes On’ a celebration of 35 years of Jamaican Music in 1990 which resulted in the full resurgence ofVintage Music and subsequent shows and renewed careers for the forgotten but true pioneers of the music industry.
    McGowan must also be credited with the giving of the very 1st International exposure to 9 out of 10 Jamaican Artiste from the late 70ies to the 90ies by showcasing them some for the first time in places worldwide like Harlem World, Madison Square Gardens, Bond on Broadway, the Apollo Theatre in New York, RFK Stadium and the DC Armory in Washington.

    At 40 something and semi retired she shares her Florida home with various charitable organizations and is very active with various community and charitable groups, and is actively involved as Board Member of many City projects, Educational Institutions and Foundations, she is the proud recipient of various local and International Awards for her benevolence, community service, dedication and service to the Caribbean communities, one of her many accolades includes; The Keys to Miami Dade County from Mayor Pinelas for her outstanding contribution to the South Florida Communities, the Jamaican Music Fraternity and her role as the Founder of Nostalgia In Gold’s Women of Excellence Award which is now in its 11th Year. She is the very proud mother of Daemion, Jody and Robert Paul Jnr -and Grandmother of Daenecia and Janese Black.
     Willie Lindo, veteran musician and producer and owner of the Heavy Beat Label now based in Florida ,who have over the years produced Reggae luminaries the likes of Beres Hammond, Nadine Sutherland, Cynthia Schloss, Marcia Griffiths, Dennis Brown, son Kachief and daughter Nekiesha Lindo among many others.
    Bunny Goodison Musicologist, King Stitt original sound operator and ‘Toaster’from the Studio One Era, International Reggae Artiste Nadine Sutherland and Beresford Hammond The Fabulous Five Band and American Guitarist Andy Bashford formerly of Lloyd Parkes’s We the People Band were among the honorees.
